Abstract

Political risks have always been a relevant factor for multinational companies in their international operations. However, hitherto we have only a very limited knowledge about the strategic and systematic management of political risks among companies. This is particularly true for Austrian based firms.

Against this backdrop, this paper wants to shed light on the management of political risks among Austrian based companies. The results of this paper are drawn from a focus group discussion among high-ranked managers of companies from different industries. The focus group discussion focused on the awareness and relevance of political risks for their operations as well as strategies and tools, which are applied to manage those political risks.

The results unveil that political risk seems to be a highly relevant topic for managers, however, often there seems to be a lack in a systematic and strategic approach to manage political risk.
